Six seconds to
decide between what’s wrong and what is right. Here I stand face to face with
my enemy. Six steps lay between him and me. Neither of us daring to move, you
can see the tension in his face, as the sweat slides down his brow.
Five seconds left to move we are both
armed with plenty of skill. My hands are shaking as my mind starts racing. I
never should have gotten out of bed this morning. I should have just slept in
late. But, no, I had to get up, I had to play. His hand moved down slowly. He’s
hesitant about his next move, I can see the fear in his eyes.
Four seconds left to choose. Time is running low. I follow his eyes
as they scan for something, anything. My sight falls to his hand. He goes and
makes his move. Feeling confidant he looks at me.
Three seconds for me to win and him to lose. Without as doubt I go
for the kill. I have studied the board, I know it well. I can play his game
twice as well. All there is left to do is move.
Two seconds there is no time to think so I grab my queen and I take
his rook. “Check mate” I say with a very proud look about my face. I could tell
I won without him making a sound. But, it felt so good.
One second to finish, with that, his king fell down.
